My Most Favourite Cats:

Duke and Earl,
my two most favorite
cats.

my two favorite cats in the whole world.

Greener Is Better

Our world is polluted from gasses and trash. There is not a lot we can do, but we can surely show that we care about the situation. As you all have noticed, I have put many pictures promoting a green/Eco-friendly way to treat the environment. Here are some helpful ways:
  • Compost your organic material
  • Use less water
  • Ride your bike to school instead of driving or taking the bus
  • Go geothermal
  • Use solar panels on your roof
  • Don't waste food or electricity
I am sure you have all heard about GREEN HOUSE GAS, and about how the polar ice caps are melting, how our water is running low and how pollution is worse than ever. Lots of companies and people have looked at these problems and have tried to solve them. Unfortunately, no one has come close to completely solving the problem.

Another point I would like to add is, have you looked at the price of gasoline lately? I have, the reason why the price goes up is because there is less oil going around to fuel cars or factories. The oil reserves are running low, which means we are running out of oil! It is a shock to some people because when they were younger, they thought we would never run out of oil. Now, we are getting much less than what we used to get. We are depleting the oil wells. Humans are ruining the earth. But, what hope is their? How do you suppose all this suffering will end?

Info On Cats: New Kitten/ Integrating a New Cat Into The Family:

Guess what blog fans, I got a new grey tabby kitten two days ago. His full name is Earl Grey Tea, but we just call him Earl. He and Duke are starting to get along, but Earl still needs a few more lessons. Today's topic of discussion is: Info On Cats: Integrating a New Cat Into The Family. This may sound like a piece of cake to you, but this is actually a very hard task. Let's say you have a new kitten, but at home you already have a full grown cat. If the cat you already have is young, and not too old, it will be possible to bring a new cat home. But, if you have a very old cat who may not be willing to have a new cat in the house may not be able to accept a new cat. So it would be better if you didn't buy a new cat. If you do have a young cat at home this is what you should do:
  1. Introduce both cats to each other carefully.
  2. Let both cats go on their way around the house and let them go to each other.
  3. If your older cat hisses or makes a deep meowing sound, do not get involved. The older cat is telling the new cat that he/she is the boss and should not be messed with.
  4. When you have the chance, bring the cats to together face to face, don't be alarmed if your older cat strikes the new cat, and when this happens, do not intervene.
  5. Over time the cats will get used to each other, this will not happen quickly.
Following the steps provided above will ensure that both cats will be comfortable in the house and they will get along well. If you have any questions or comments about cats or about any topic provided in this blog, I would be more than happy to answer them. ☺

Poconos

Are you all having a great winter break? I am having a blast! I am taking a vacation in Pocono, a town in New Jersey. Unfortunately, there is no snow to go tubing on, but we are certainly having fun going to the stores and cities. Tomorrow we are going to New York City. We will go to Central park and probably Times Square. If you have a fun vacation story, put it in the comment section and I will post in on my next vacation article! Have fun!

IMPORTANT Info On Cats: Collars and licenses

This Info On Cats article is a very important one when it comes to your cat's safety. When you get a cat you have to get it a license, a small keychain-looking thing that has your cat's information on it. Your cat MUST wear these licenses because if your cat gets lost, someone will look at the collar and return it. If your cat does not have a collar and license, it may be taken to a pound and you may never get your cat back. When you buy a collar, you should not be too fancy because your cat doesn't care if it has diamonds or not, the simpler the collar the better. I bought my cat a Safe Cat® Break Away reflective collar because he likes to go outside at night. Most collars have a Break Away feature. The Break Away feature is, if your cat gets stuck on a branch or something that won't let it get away, the collar will break the clip that holds the collar together, letting the cat get away. Some people may not bother putting the collar on the cat or even putting the license on the collar. Don't do that, as soon as you get your cat, get the collar on with the licenses, especially if your cat goes for walks outside like mine does. Remember, the collar doesn't have to be fancy, just a nice design and a bell is good. Your veterinarian will update your cat's license every year. Keep your cat safe and happy.

Orienteering

Orienteering November,28, 2010

We were driving to the park on a dreary cold November morning, I was barely awake on the trip there. I tried to keep my eyes open long enough so I would not have to sleep in the small car. We drove through roads that seemed to go into the middle of nowhere In time, trees began to emerge from the barren land. First, small trees appeared, then pine and then spruce trees. We chugged along the road looking for a good place to drop off Mommy and Grandma when we spotted a village of stores on the way to the race. We dropped them off and continued along our way.

The rest of us continued driving on yet another road that had a few houses sprinkled along the way. We made our way to a sign that said “Museum and Park”. As we drove in my brother and I had sour faces. Once we got in I sat up suddenly, becoming fully awake when we headed for a parking lot beside a frozen lake and a rickety boardwalk. We scoped around for any people, but there were no people yet.

We waited inside the car until people started arriving in small cars. We got out of the car and stepped into the frigid wind and snow. We walked to a bench to sign in and to drop off our car keys in exchange for SportIdent cards. The cold air brushed against my face and I shivered. I walked back to the car and waited for Daddy to finish signing us in. He came back with a sheet of paper containing the race’s rules which he read aloud while I sat in my seat with disappointment. I was not happy about doing another race. We finished reading the rules and went outside again to get all of our equipment ready. I went and prepared my backpack while Thorin got his ready

Once all of the racers were warmed up from their short jogs, the race started ..The only person I was in competition with was a girl, who was about my age. She was probably a pro at orienteering because she looked like she had been in many races already. We got our maps from boxes and oriented ourselves. The whistle was blown and we all scattered in different directions. As for me, I went in a direction alone. I walked over to the first flag, with my freezing finger tips clutching the map. I had run up a hill to get to the very first flag, I tried to beep the button but it was not working so I scrambled to get the map out and punch it. By the time I punched it, the other girl was already running ahead of me so I walked over to the next flag. My toes began to go numb from the snow which began to get my feet wet.

I looked at the map and looked up the monstrous ski hill that lay before me. On the top of the hill stood the flag I needed to get, I began to run but by shoes started to slip on the wet rocks. I walked and finally made it to the flag, but by the time I got there, everyone had passed me by. I looked at the map and looked at the vague trails ahead of me. I thought for a minute and started the hardest part of the long race.

Get Off Oil: Foreign Policy September-October 2010

    Get Off Oil

Americans borrow $1 billion a day to import oil. Oil can cause environmental problems that soon become permanent. Studies put the cost of dealing with gasoline as extremely expensive because gasoline is composed of benzene, toluene, and xylene, which studies say affect our health, like shortening our life spans. Studies also show that cancer is caused by these three chemicals in gasoline. Oil not only causes health problems, but it also costs a lot of money to buy and to import.

American politicians have said that “foreign oil” or oil from places other than the U.S. is a problem. Unfortunately, the American politicians have come up with either expensive or impossible solutions to get rid of foreign oil. Thus the matter is left unsolved. Drilling for oil in the U.S. may help with some of the U.S. payments for foreign oil , but it won’t help with undermining O.P.E.C.’s control of the oil market. When the U.S. pays for oil, most of the oil goes to transportation like cars, trucks and buses, but only 2% of the oil goes to making electricity which is where politicians are focussing their policies on. The only environmental policy that Obama has found to discourage high-carbon emissions is a program called “cap and trade”. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that Obama will get his policy passed through Congress.

Obama can turn to a portfolio of other steps that he can use to find solutions to get the U.S. off oil sooner. For example there is hydrogen. Hydrogen is good because it is quicker ????.

Here are 5 things he can do now:

    1. Boost the popularity of plug-in hybrid cars
    2. Transform vehicles that travel all the time like buses into natural gas users
    3. Allow alternative fuel to be purchased like alcohol based fuel.
    4. Require more efficient forms of eternal combustion engines
    5. Encourage car companies to use carbon composite materials when building their cars. This will make the car lighter and will require smaller engines to propel them.

If Obama were to use these solutions, he may reduce the amount of oil transported to the U.S. by 10% over the next decade which could shatter the oil companies’ transportation monopoly, which is about 95% in the U.S.. If Obama doesn’t take action soon, Americans will have a harder life than ever. For example, Americans will fall into greater debt, contribute to climate and environmental changes and will give themselves even more health problems than they already have.

Info On Cats: Keep Your Cat Warm

Welcome back to info on cats. By now your house must be covered in a soft blanket of sparkling snow that give you chills in the morning sun. When you think of that sentence it might make you head south for the winter. As humans we have coats and jackets, scarves, gloves and cozy hats to keep us warm. But your cat might not have that good of a winter coat because of all the shedding they do during the summer and winter. I bought my cat some dog coats and I also made some. My cat doesn't really like wearing a coat, but in the fall and spring it gets cold and the fur coats they wear just aren't enough. Dog coats are just as good because people don't sell cat clothes. When you buy dog coats, make sure you get a medium or small for your cat so it fits just right.

Info On Cats: How do they purr?

Have you ever pet a cat and listened to the soothing purr. Scientists actually don't know why cats purr. It could be that they are scared or happy, maybe even sad. But we do know where the purr originates from in the cats body. Fun Fact: Large cats like tigers and lions can't purr like small felines can. The cat uses the muscles of the larynx to vibrate the glottis very fast. That causes the purr sound. After all of those big words, it comes from some muscles in the cat near the mouth. If you want the exact definition of those two words, look it up in a dictionary, or click this link:

So, enjoy your adorable cat's purr. It is so relaxing when I listen to my cat purr. Tip: If you feel stressed from work, take some time off and just look at your cat. If it's sleeping go ahead and watch it. It may sound boring, but it is actually a great stress reliever. Try it out! =) What do you think, did the cats purr come by chance or was it created?

Info on Cats: Are cats colour blind?

Are Cats Color Blind?
I was wondering if my cat couldn't see the different colours in my home, but in actual fact, cats can see different colours, but not very clearly. They see colours vaguely. They can see your blue carpet on the floor but it may be a little dull in their eyes, but to us that blue is radiant. So there is a significant difference between us and cats. In the 1940's scientists thought cats couldn't see different colours, only grey. But further research revealed the amazing fact of cats being able to see colours. Of course their eyes are able to see in dim lighting, so the need for colour is not mandatory for cats. Their eyesight is able to pick up movement that we couldn't see. For example, if a mouse scurries through the bushes at night, the cat will hear and most likely see it, but we would not even have noticed. It is just amazing how cats can have all these amazing qualities. What do you think, did the cat's eyesight come by chance or was it created?

Info On Cats: Catnip

Welcome back to Info On Cats! Today's topic is "Catmint or Catnip". I gave my cat a toy that had catmint inside as filling and he goes crazy over it! If you have a cat(adult) then it will be able to control itself when it eats or chews on catnip. If you have a kitten, you may worry a little. Don't worry. The catmint is harmless to the cat. Give your cat some and he will put on a show for you. The symptoms of catmint from personal experience (when your cat eats it) are:
  • dizziness
  • loss of balance
  • sleepiness
  • disorientation
  • and hyper behavior
If your cat eats or chews on this plant,(above picture) don't worry. It is normal for you cat to have those symptoms and to be eating plants. Over a period of time, your cat will get used to the catmint and will develop a small immunity to the symptoms above. Of course your cat will still act funny. So all in all, don't freak out if your cat eats catnip. =)

The Wii: Does it actually give you the exercise you need? (Written By Jello-Vera)

Wii

The Wii can imitate actions and vibrations the same way a real game of tennis can, but is the Wii really a good game system to have?

My mom wants to know whether or not the Wii can give you the exercise you need. First, what can a Wii do? A Wii enables you to do actions involved in a game. For example, when you play baseball, you use the controller as a bat and you try to hit the ball as if you were actually playing baseball. The Wii is not like the X-Box, the X-Box doesn’t make you stand up and move around. The controllers that the X-Box uses, makes you use as little energy as possible when playing games because it only makes you use your thumbs. The Wii, however, makes you move around and stand up. The Wii can count as a little bit of exercise because it makes you use more than your thumbs to play.

Ehow.com took a survey that showed the X-box and the PS 3(Play Station 3) only raised the player’s heart rate by 20%; whereas, the Wii raised the heart rate up to 75%-100%. That showed that using an X-Box or a PS 3 only increased the player’s heart rate a small amount, but the Wii reached up to a 100% increase. A person used a heart rate monitor and tested his heart rate before and after playing Wii Sports. Before he started to play his heart rate was 76 BPM. After 35 minutes of playing Wii sports his heart reached a rate of 158 BPM and he burned 491 calories. He reached the point where the Wii counted as exercise. The Wii can get your heart rate higher than an X-Box or a PS 3, which makes the Wii is a better source of exercise.

Playing Time: 35 minutes

Activities: Batting practice, Tennis, boxing practice
Target Heart Rate: 122 – 150 BPM

Heart Rate
Pre-Wii: 76 BPM
Average: 126 BPM
Highest: 158 BPM

Total Time in “The Zone”: 19:54
Calories Burned: 491

Finally, the Wii is a good source of exercise for the whole family using the large variety of games that Wii has to offer.

The Yimbys: Foreign Policy September/October 2010

Russia: Prime Minister Vladamir Putin says he has big plans for Russia’s nuclear energy. In 2001, when Vladamir Putin was the president of Russia, he signed a package of laws about importing nuclear fuel that was purchased. This process allowed trading to happen. Over the last decade this process made $20 billion. Russia has also purchased fuel from Bulgaria, Czech, Republic, Latvia, Libya, Romania, Suburbia and Uzbekistan. Russia also bought depleted uranium from power plants in France, Germany, and the Netherlands. An estimated 700,000 tons of radioactive uranium tailings (including waste from Russia) are being held in Siberian cold storage. Mayak is known for having the number of ecological disasters. However, for Vladamir Putin, it means big money. $$$

Mexico: Barack Obama may be rethinking off shore drilling. But Mexican Felipe Calderon’s main concern is that his country is not drilling enough. Their oil production has decreased by 1 billion barrels since 2004. Pemex, an oil monopoly or a company with an exclusive right to oil wells, is drilling new oil wells everywhere to find oil. All of Mexico’s wild life should be afraid because according to Pemex’s safety record more than 1,000 Pemex workers have died in industrial accidents in the last 20 years. After all, Pemex is responsible for the 1979 toxic disaster.

Ghana: The Ghana government has tried to make good come from trash. Ghana basically wants to make electricity come from the gases of the trash heaps. Ghana hopes they will reach the goals of generating 50 megawatts of electricity out of trash over the next 15 years. In Ghana, so many people look through the trash that there is hardly anything left to make electricity from gas. In 2008, Ghana spent $250 million on importing trash from Canada and Western Europe.

Netherlands: The Netherlands has so few prisoners that they hard to close 8 prisons and cut more than a thousand jobs. Belgian has the opposite problem. They have 10, 400 prisoners and they need more space. The Belgian government is thinking of renting 500 Dutch prisons for $38 million a year to send their prisoners to.

Australia: Australia is worried about the growing opium producing poppies because they don’t want to increase crime, drug abuse and terrorism. Poppies are legal to grow in Australia for medicine like for pain relief. So, Tasmania has taken the opportunity to grow poppies and rake in $60 million per year.

Middle Kingdom Meets Magic Kingdom: The Economist 2010

Middle Kingdom Meets Magic Kingdom

Some kids, as young as toddlers stumble into a small building set in between a fast-food joint and a dusty drug store. The students enter into a box shaped room, it looks like a run down school room with the addition of interactive video screens. These interactive video screens allow the kids to touch Disney related icons. The interactive system helps the kids to learn English. For example, when they show a picture of Mickey Mouse with a paintbrush and paper it would say, ”Mickey Mouse is painting”. Pictures and words help the students learn.

This type of schooling costs around $1,800 a year. For people in China this is a large sum of money just for English classes. But, Disney claims that this type of schooling produces impressive results in t he children. Each classroom has a local and western teacher to help the students. The teachers and programs use pictures and words that the students can relate to and to help the information sink in better.

There are 10 schools in Shanghai and 5 in Beijing. Disney plans to double that number in the next year. The older schools already have waiting lists for the classes, but training and staff are limited and when they aren't the teachers can’t always get to the schools. Disney hopes to keep doubling their numbers every year.

Disney’s focus groups - the people who discuss the pros. and cons. Of the English classes with recent statistics- find that for Chinese parents, “education means everything”. English in particular is viewed as a ticket to the wider world or English helps their kids succeed when it comes to finding a job or living in an English speaking country says Mr. Sugermen, manager of the Disney English Programs.

Children’s English –language education in China is growing by 12% every year and will reach $3.7 billion by 2012. Adele Mao, an analyst at OLP Global, a research and consulting firm, thinks the market is already near $6 billion a year and is growing by 20% every year.

The rewards are huge not only for the students and their families but also for Disney. Since the children have become so attached to Mickey and Goofy, they will probably ask their parents to buy them toys of Mickey and Goofy and to go to the theme park. That is why the classes are also beneficial for Disney.

Welcome Back!
I hope you had a good summer, since we are all in school again and in higher grades, I am posting in a different format. I will be posting foreign policies but in a simpler format regularly. That doesn't mean I won't do fun things anymore. I am still up for suggestions. But right now I have a contest, I have a new online viewer counter and would really like to reach 100 viewers! Whoever is the 100th viewer will get to choose what I will write about for 1 day. Whatever you choose has to be within reason. If I do not approve of the viewers choice I will pick a different one. If you wish to see the counter it is on the right hand side of the screen at the middle. The counter looks like four red apples. Please comment and I have a new feature available to you. When you read a post, at the bottom there will be 3 or 4 boxes with a word that may describe the post you read, click on which ever one you think describes the post you read best. A Poem:

Confused.
Confused, no ideas.
Confused, no ideas, nothing.
Confused, no ideas, nothing, and yet...
Something.
Something, anything.
Something, anything, everything.
Something, anything, everything, still...
Alone.
Alone, by yourself.
Alone, by yourself, no one.
Alone, by yourself, no one, but I have...
A friend.
A friend, a nice friend.
A friend, a nice friend, who is always there.
A friend, a nice friend, who is always there, who...?
ME.

A contemperary poem to express feelings. This simple format is suposed to capture your feelings and lead you deep into the poem as you read. This poem can be expressed as a painting or a sketch or even a story. Try writing a poem or painting a picture when you are really mad or really happy. Look at the picture and write a poem. It may sound or look weird when you show it to other people, but you will understand it and that is what matters. Submit a poem and I will post it on this blog post. ♡

A Summer Haiku:

A gentle cool breeze,
A bright beautiful day,
A warm summer day.

What I wrote above is a form of poetry. This type of poem is from Japan and is considered a tough form of poetry. You firsts have to think up a theme. Mine was about summer. You make three lines. The first line has to be 5 syllables. The second line has to be 7 syllables. The Third line has to be 5 syllables again. This may not look like 5, 7 and 5 syllables, but it is. Just count the beats of each line.

Game Websites:

Do you like playing video games on the computer? If you do, I am posting some very good websites you can go to that I would sugest. Here are the websites:

These are some websites that are fun and have a large variety of games from action to puzzle games. Miniclip allows you to make your own avatar. Nitrome has accounts like Miniclip but you have to be 13 or older to join. Nick-asia also lets you have and avatar. There is no age group for that one. Ninjakiwi doesn't have any avatars ar anything like that, all it has are games. For ninjakiwi.com I would suggest tower defence or a game called Bloons.

How to write a story:

Do you need to write a story or an article? If you do this post will be of help. There are 3 points you must know:

  • The Beginning
  • The Climax or Story
  • The Conclusion
These are all the parts of your story. The beginning can be tricky, you have to pull your reader into the story. You have to talk about the characters briefly and talk about what the story is about, but without the details. The climax is the middle, in that part you write your story or article. The conclusion is simply ending the story, but you must make it good. Think of all three points being a burger or sandwich. There are the buns= Beginning and Conclusion, The meat and condiments = The Climax. Hope this was helpful. If you have any ideas about topics or questions, don't hesitate to ask. ☺

I sugest that you take a look at this blog site, it shows interesting things like how to lock pick and how to hot wire a car, it's more for boys though. Take a look anyway. Just click the link below.

Save Your Pineapple Top

Today I will talk about a very fun way to get rid of your pineapple top. I Read about this in an english book. Here is how you do it:

  1. First, cut off the crown of the pineapple. The sharp leaves at the top.
  2. Second, make sure the roots of the crown can be seen. They would look like white dots or bulbs.
  3. Then you take a medium sized pot and fill it with topsoil. Put the crown in the topsoil. Make sure the leaves are showing.
  4. Next, put it outside only if it is hot, if not put it in the sun in the house. It must always be warm.
  5. There is a chance you may not grow a pineapple because of the tempurature. If you do grow one, it may not be very big like the ones from the store.
  6. Make sure you water it every once in a while. Not too much or you may drown the plant. Keep an eye on the plant and if you have trouble with the plant, comment and I will see what I can do. Below is what your pineapple top can look like. ♥

Have fun and try new things. If you have suggestions on topics or if you have a story or anything, put it in the comments section. If you have something you wrote, I will post it if you want. ☺

Ah, summer. A wonderful time. A time when the flowers bloom and the birds chirp. Well, summer may look as peaceful and as innocent as I wrote it. In actual fact, summer can be hazardous. How? Well, the heat from the sun can cause cancer, heat stroke, sun burns and could even make you blind if you are not careful. How could the sun cause cancer? If you enjoy the sun you may go outside and put on sun glasses and read a book. But while you are reading that book, the sun is burning your skin. Your skin turns red. A lot of people make tis mistake. They think that since we are in Canada the sun won't hurt. That is wrong. A lot of people these days are getting cancer from making that same mistake all the time and not dressing properly. If you look at my previous blog 'Have a sun burn?' It will tell you how you can get rid of your sun burn and prevent one. Heat stroke. This happens when you don't drink enough water during the day. I got heat stroke once. I couldn't even keep my eyes open I was so dehidrated. I was in Florida and I had a lot of misquido bites and a little sun burn on my arms and legs. I didn't drink enogh water and the poisen in the bites made me weary So I would sleep most of the time. You can prevent this from happening by drinking at least 2 L of water a day and wearing light weight long sleeves and pants and always wearing a hat. How could the sun make you blind? It's quite obvious, if you don't wear sun glasses that are not UV Ray protected or not wear them at all the sun could blind you with it's brightness. If you have any comments or questions, please comment. If you do not know how, take a look at my blog 'Commenting.' ☀

My Cat

You know how I post info about cats. I have talked about cats and my cat! Well, I will tell you about my cat and show some pictures. He is so cute when he sleeps. Here is a picture I took today of him sleeping on the couch.
He will sleep on anything, as long as it's soft. Above, is a picture of how he looks. He is gentle and kind, he will let anyone pet him. In this picture he is wanting to go outside. This I took a while ago, a week or two. Just before I let him outside I took some pictures. He is a short haired tabby and is a few cat years old. If you can, post a picture of your cat in the comment section and talk about him/her. If it is good I will post it on my blog. ☺

The Peeled Banana

Once upon a time there was a banana. A very happy banana who lived in a tree. He was as yellow as can be. So one lovely morning he went for a walk, he walked through a strawberry patch and then a blueberry bush to meet some other friends. But when he was walking he came to a sign which said, "The who enters will be eaten." So Banana, the banana, kept on walking towards his home. When he got home he made fresh bumble leaf tea and tofu cake. When he started to eat, a star fruit came running to his door, huffing and puffing from running. Star, the starfruit said, " Hide, the monkeys are coming!" Then ran off to tell the strawberries. Banana went to his kitchen and ate his cake and drank his tea then left his house to go for a walk. Banana said to himself, " Silly monkeys, they shouldn't be eating us! That is very uncivilized!" He trotted toward the big sign that he saw the day before. He walked in and passed the sign. He came to a monkey sitting in the sun. He said very loudly, "stop eating us!" To the monkey, it was a tiny squeaking sound. So the monkey reached for the small banana and peeled it open and... the banana's last words were, " I forgot, banana's are a monkey's favourite treat!" Chomp! That was the end of that.

Nancy Drew: Secret Of The Old Clock

My favourite books are by Carolyn Keen. She writes about a teenager who solves mysteries. Nancy Drew is the main character, she has a father, Carson Drew who is a lawyer and a house keeper, Hannah Gruen. This book takes place in the 1980's. In this book Nancy Drew has to find all the clues to a missing second will. She runs into thieves and has to find out who has been stealing from peoples houses. It is a very good book, if you enjoy mysteries there is also The Hardy Boys. It takes place in the same time period as Nancy Drew. There is over 100 books in this hard cover series. Once you've finished the hard cover series, you can move on to the extensive paperback series of Nancy Drew, the paperback takes place in the present time period. I highly recommend these books!
